What we do

Since 2009, we combat malnutrition and improve the quality of life of communities high up in the Andes mountains of Peru. We do so by introducing organic vegetable gardening, starting at schools, then working also with families. Currently, we are scaling up our impact by involving Peruvian authorities in implementing our solution.

Why

At around 3.800 meters (12.500 feet) above sea level, the Peruvian Andes are a difficult place to live in. The climate is cold and harsh, with a lack of water for months on end, fierce UV radiation and hail storms beating down on thin, poor soils.

People live here in isolated small communities and are very poor, practising only subsistence farming. Safe drinking water, health care, proper education and job opportunities are absent. Hygiene and housing conditions are deplorable. The indigenous population is being discriminated against by the government, with girls and women finding themselves at an even more disadvantaged position.

The only crop grown up here is potatoe. The local diet, therefore, also consists mainly of potatoe. All people, but especially children are severely affected by this poor, unhealthy diet. They suffer from chronic malnutrition (13,1 % of children under 5 years) and anemia (43-45 % of children between 6 and 36 months) (UN World Food Programma, May 2022).

schools

At the request of a community, we start by building a school garden with teachers, pupils and parents. Instruction, most tools and materials come from Por Eso! We demand that, in return, the community puts in their fair share of labour, in order to avoid non-sustainable dependency on aid. Step-by-step the community expands the school garden with, amongst others, shade awnings, green houses and irrigation. They build a clean kitchen and cafetaria where school classes cook and enjoy their own healthy lunches. We instruct teachers how to integrate subjects like math, biology and fysics into the gardening lessons.cocinan y disfrutan de sus propios almuerzos

Instruimos a los maestros sobre cómo integrar materias como matemáticas, biología y psicología en las lecciones de jardinería.

Families

Using the school garden as an example, families can start their own vegetable garden. After a few years, they usually grow more greens than they can eat. Selling their surplus at the market, they earn much needed cash. As families learn about the crucial relations between food, health and hygiene, they improve the comfort and hyiene of their homes.
